On May 16th, 2022, a powerful thunderstorm developed over the desert-like high plains region just northeast of the Raton Mesa. After the storm developed and moved into lower elevation areas, it encountered remarkably dry air, helping to generate lightning. This lightning was vivid, bright, and arcing well away from the storm where there were maybe 3-4 bolts per second for over an hour.
